Society views domestic violence in a stereotypical sense, where the victim
small, passive woman who is being assaulted by a large, tyrannical man.
We often do not think of domestic violence in same-sex relationships,
but it still occurs. However, LGBT domestic abuse victims are typically
more isolated than other victims.
How LGBT Domestic Abuse Appears
Similar to heterosexual couples, a same-sex relationship may start as happy
and loving. Then, over time, one partner may become manipulative, which
results in physical aggression. While every form of domestic abuse are
suffered by all parties, how are LGBT victims able to approach their friends
and say that their girlfriend raped them, does that count if a female
sexually assaulted another female?
In reality, the numbers are quite staggering. According to a 2010 study
(which was updated in 2013) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), the lifetime prevalence of stalking, physical violence, and/or
by an intimate partner was 43.8% for lesbians, 61.1% for bisexual women,
26% for gay men, and 37.3% for bisexual. The CDC also determined that
gay men and lesbians experience higher or equal rates of domestic violence
and sexual abuse compared to those in heterosexual relationships.
Obstacles in Getting Help for LGBT Domestic Violence Victims
The abuse is difficult to determine. Since LGBT couples typically share
the same social network, this type of relationship can result in the abuser
alienating the victim from their support system. In most cases, the victim
has not publicly announced that he or she is gay, which gives the abuser
power by threatening to out the victim to their family, friends, and acquaintances
as a form of control.
